Dục chi kỳ

Dục chi kỳ kỳ ư đắc kì sở dục dã,tị chi kỳ kỳ ư bất ngộ kì sở tị dã,cố bất đắc kỳ sở dục,vị bất xa yên;ngộ kì sở tị,vị hoạn yên。Tạ lệnh ngô sở dục đắc,duy dục đắc kì sở đắc chi tại ngã nhĩ;ngô sở tị,duy tị kì sở bất ngộ chi tại ngã nhĩ;tắc khởi hữu bất hạnh nhi sảo vi hoạn tai!Nhĩ kí vinh lộc、an dật、tu thọ,nhĩ úy bần tiện、thiên bệnh、tử tang,cố bất miễn thời bất hạnh nhi lũ hoạn dã。

Desire contains a movement toward obtaining what one desires, and aversion has a movement away from the things one wishes to avoid. Therefore if one fails in his desire, he is unfortunate; likewise he who falls into what he would like to avoid, is unhappy. If a man attempts to obtain only those things which depend properly on him and avoid those things which are properly to be avoided, then he would never be unhappy or miserable. But if you desire honor, wealth, power, and a long life and if you attempt to avoid poverty, hatred, death, and disease, then you will be unhappy and often quite miserable.
